Best Travel Backpacks 2026: Nomatic Travel Pack 20L vs Osprey vs Cotopaxi
This guide exists to help you decide whether the Nomatic Travel Pack 20L is the right bag. For a personal-item profile, organization, a 2–4 day trip, and a laptop travel pack with briefcase carry, that is our default recommendation. Official US list $349.99.
We still put two other current flagships next to it from official brand sites: Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 40 (a 40L carry-on you wear) and Cotopaxi Allpa 42L (a suitcase-style week pack). They are honest alternatives for different jobs — not the default buy, and not smear targets.
Prices are official list prices where the brand published them. If a site hid the number behind a cart, we mark it check-at-checkout. This is not a hands-on field test.

Who this guide is for
- US and UK shoppers buying from official brand sites.
- People shopping a personal-item backpack, an organizer, a 2–4 day kit, or a laptop travel pack — Nomatic’s brief.
- One-bag trips from a long weekend up to about a week, comparing personal-item vs carry-on size — not a 70L hiking pack.
Wheeled bags and 55–70L checkable packs are different products (see FAQ).
Quick verdict
Default recommendation
2–4 day trips, organization, briefcase carry, 16" laptop, personal-item profile
Nomatic Travel Pack 20L
22 pockets, 20L→30L, backpack + briefcase, 16" + 14" sleeves. Unexpanded personal-item claim on most airlines. US list $349.99.
If you will walk with a 40L carry-on and want $200
Osprey Farpoint 40 / Fairview 40
40L, adjustable torso, LightWire frame, zip-away harness, $200 list. Farpoint = men; Fairview = women. Honest alternative — not the default.
If you need suitcase-style week packing and a 15" laptop
Cotopaxi Allpa 42L
Full-wrap zipper, 3 compartments, tuckable straps, 42L. Honest alternative — not the default. Check 27 cm depth and 15" laptop max.
Default buy: Nomatic Travel Pack 20L — 2–4 day trips, organization, briefcase carry, 16" laptop, personal-item profile.
Buy Osprey instead if you will walk with a 40L carry-on and want the listed $200 pack.
Buy Allpa instead if you need suitcase-style week packing and the airline sizer allows 27 cm depth and the laptop is 15" or smaller.

Nomatic Travel Pack 20L — the default pick
Default recommendation
For: officially 2–4 day trips, laptop-and-documents kits, personal-item carry, and anyone who wants briefcase carry in an office.
Official 20L: expands 20L→30L, 22 pockets, fold-down laptop compartment, RFID-safe and hidden back-panel pockets, magnetic bottle pockets, backpack-to-briefcase straps. Laptop 16"; tablet 14". Unexpanded, Nomatic calls it a personal item on most airlines. US list $349.99.
That is the job this site is built around: personal item, organization, 2–4 day, laptop travel pack. If that is your trip, buy this pack unless a con below rules you out.
Honest cons (from the official page) — we do not hide these
- Heavy empty. 4 lb 1 oz before you pack anything — the heaviest of the three flagships. Nomatic’s own review summary (last updated 25 Feb 2026) says some customers note the bag feels heavy because of robust construction.
- Sized for taller frames. Official table recommends the 20L for 5'9" and taller. Shorter travelers are steered to the 14L (14L → 21L), which is a different trip-length product.
- Zipper wear shows up in the official summary; Nomatic points to its lifetime warranty. A verified-buyer quote notes waist straps are sold separately.
- $349.99 US list — more than Osprey’s $200 40L. You are paying for the organizer layout and personal-item claim, not for a cheaper empty weight.

US dimensions were not listed on the nomatic.com comparison table we could read. Nomatic Australia lists 18.5" H × 12" W × 6–9.5" D — treat US dimensions as check-at-checkout. Colors (US): Black, Navy, Olive.
Osprey Farpoint 40 / Fairview 40 — honest alternative
Not the default buy
Buy this instead if you will walk with a loaded 40L carry-on and want the listed $200 pack. It is a real backpacking harness, not a 20-pocket organizer.
Official Farpoint 40: 40L, 3.27 lb, 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.1 in (55 × 35 × 23 cm), 16" laptop, adjustable torso, LightWire frame, lockable main zip, external toiletry pocket, zip-away harness. Collection list $200. Pick Farpoint or Fairview by harness; Extended Fit is the same price. Carry-on wording is domestic.
Official features also include: large front-panel access, WingJacket compression, padded top + side handles, two internal compression straps, internal mesh pocket, compatibility with the Farpoint/Fairview Travel Daypack, and the All Mighty Guarantee. Load range listed on the Farpoint 40 spec: 7–16 kg. 55L/70L Farpoint/Fairview and wheeled versions are different products — not this carry-on comparison.
Honest cons (from official copy / spec)
- Domestic carry-on only in the claim. 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.1 in will clear many US overhead bins; some international sizers (especially 55 × 40 × 20 cm) are tighter on depth. Always check the airline.
- You must pick the right harness. Farpoint and Fairview are sold as separate fits. The “wrong” 40L is still 40L of bag with a harness that was not designed for that torso/shoulder shape.
- Organization is travel-simple, not 20-pocket. A big front-panel main compartment, an external toiletry pocket, a 16" laptop sleeve, and a mesh pocket — not a tech-organizer layout. Buyers who want a pocket for every cable will find Nomatic closer to that brief.
Farpoint 40 / Fairview 40 on Osprey
US shoppers: osprey.com. UK shoppers: osprey.com/gb is usually the cleaner fulfilment path. Spec table referenced: Farpoint 40 (osprey.com/gb/farpoint-40-s26).
Cotopaxi Allpa 42L — honest alternative
Not the default buy
Buy this instead if you need suitcase-style packing for a week-scale trip and your laptop is 15" or smaller. Check cabin depth before you commit.
Official Allpa 42L: 42L (2563 cu in), 3 lb 2 oz (1.41 kg), 22 × 14 × 11 in (56 × 36 × 27 cm), full-wrap zipper, three compartments (1 large / 1 medium / 1 small), 15" laptop sleeve (padded, fleece-lined), tuckable straps and hip belt, recycled 840D TPU nylon + ballistic ripstop, lockable anti-theft YKK. UK £240 (standard); Del Día 42L £220 on uk.cotopaxi.com. EU €290 on eu.cotopaxi.com. US: check-at-checkout — cotopaxi.com did not expose a static list price in the 25 Aug 2026 fetch.
Also official: stretch mesh bottle pocket (up to 1L / 32 oz), front zip organizer + key clip (Allpa X Hip Pack compatible), 3 grab handles, roller pass-through, 4 exterior webbing loops, recycled polyester lining, Guaranteed for Good™. 28L and 35L Allpas exist; 42L is the flagship extended-trip pack.
Honest cons (from official specs)
- Laptop max is 15". Nomatic 20L and Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 40 both list 16". 16" laptop owners should not be sent to the Allpa 42L as a “fits your laptop” pick.
- Cabin-sizer risk. Official 56 × 36 × 27 cm. Many EU/UK airlines quote ~55 × 40 × 20–23 cm. Depth is the failure mode. Cotopaxi positions this as the biggest adventure travel pack / extended trips — not a guaranteed personal item.
- 42L is a week-scale bag. Wrong if the shopper wanted a 2–4 day personal-item pack (that brief is closer to Nomatic 20L or Allpa 28L).
UK store: uk.cotopaxi.com. EU store: eu.cotopaxi.com. Warranty and Del Día colours are cleaner on official EU/UK sites than on a random marketplace listing.
Verdict
Default recommendation: Nomatic Travel Pack 20L for 2–4 day trips, organization, briefcase carry, a 16" laptop, and a personal-item profile. That is the pack this page is here to sell — with the cons listed above (4 lb 1 oz empty, 5'9"+ fit, zipper notes, hip belt sold separately, $349.99).
Buy the Osprey 40 instead if you will walk with a 40L carry-on and want the listed $200 pack. Buy the Allpa 42L instead if you need suitcase-style week packing, a 15" laptop or smaller, and the airline sizer allows 27 cm depth. In all three cases, click out to the official product page for warranty and the live spec; use Amazon only when that exact model is in stock and Prime helps.

FAQ
Is this a hands-on review?
No. It is a research comparison from official product pages, last checked 25 August 2026. We do not publish staged review photos of bags we did not use.
Which pack is the default recommendation?
The Nomatic Travel Pack 20L, for 2–4 day trips, organization, briefcase carry, a 16" laptop, and a personal-item profile. Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 40 is the alternative if you will walk with a 40L carry-on and want $200. Cotopaxi Allpa 42L is the alternative if you need suitcase-style week packing and a 15" laptop.
Which pack is carry-on legal?
None of them on every airline. Nomatic lists the unexpanded 20L as a personal item on most airlines. Osprey lists the 40L as meeting domestic carry-on size. Cotopaxi’s 42L is 22 × 14 × 11 in — often a US overhead bag, often too deep internationally.
What about Allpa 28L / 35L or Nomatic 14L?
Real products. Nomatic 14L is the official pick for shorter frames and 1–2 day trips. Allpa 28L is Cotopaxi’s closer “carry-on size” bag on the UK site. This page compares each brand’s flagship travel pack.
Should EU shoppers use Amazon.es?
Sometimes for Osprey and Cotopaxi, if the exact model is in stock. Nomatic is still primarily nomatic.com. Official EU/UK brand stores for Osprey and Cotopaxi are usually the cleaner warranty path.
Prices and specs change. Recheck the official page at checkout. Written for US/UK shoppers first; EU notes appear where the official regional store is clearly better. Research pass: 25 August 2026.
